Recently design concepts for a numerical optical processor have evolved in which we see digital techniques implemented with optical devices. This paper describes design concepts for a numerical optical processor which is based on the residue number system.

Computational Methods for Simulating Quantum Computers

This review gives a survey of numerical algorithms and software to simulate quantum computers. It covers the basic concepts of quantum computation and quantum algorithms and includes a few examples that illustrate the use of simulation software for ideal and physical models of quantum computers.

Quantum Computing

uantum computers will utilize nonclassical logic operations to perform numerical calculations that are not feasible on conventional computers. The enhanced capabilities of quantum computers result partly from their expected ability to perform many different calculations simultaneously on a single processor. The Applied Physics Laboratory is developing an optical approach to quantum computing. (

Bimodal optical computers.

Analog optical solutions of numerical problems tend to be fast, simple, and inaccurate. Digital optical or electronic solutions to the same problems tend to be slower, harder, and more accurate. In circumstances outlined here, hybrid analog-digital systems can be built which give the accuracy of digital solutions with intermediate degrees of speed and simplicity. Because at any instant these pr...

UCHPC – UnConventional High Performance Computing for Finite Element Simulations

Processor technology is still dramatically advancing and promises enormous improvements in processing data for the next decade. These improvements are driven by parallelisation and specialisation of resources, and ‘unconventional hardware’ like GPUs or the Cell processor can be seen as forerunners of this development. At the same time, much smaller advances are expected in moving data; this mea...

Dark soliton dynamics in spatially inhomogeneous media: Application to Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the dynamics of dark solitons in spatially inhomogeneous media with applications to cigar-shaped Bose–Einstein condensates trapped in a harmonic magnetic potential and a periodic potential representing an optical lattice. We distinguish and systematically investigate the cases with the optical lattice period being smaller, larger, or comparable to the width of the dark soliton. Analyti...
